MEET MATTHEW RORICK
I started making the Forlorn Hope wines in 2005; the first few vintages were very small – around 50 cases each of three or four different wines. At that time I was the winemaker at a Napa Valley winery producing Napa Cabernet and Sonoma Coast Pinot noir and Chardonnay; the Forlorn Hope wines were a way for me to continue to explore the terroirs of different regions in California. In both the vineyard and the cellar I prefer to do what is necessary – and no more. Everyone’s definition of ‘necessary’ is different, but for me, that involves farming organically, and making no changes or additions to the grapes/must/wine with the exception of minimal sulfur only when needed.
